چکیده

Calreticulin plays a critical role in the etiology of multiple autoimmune diseases. It is unknown, however, whether calreticulin levels are of clinical significance for patients with biliary atresia. This study was to confirm possible correlations between serum calreticulin levels and the immunohistochemical features of biliary atresia. Serum was collected from 44 biliary atresia patients, 15 infants with anicteric choledochal cysts, and 12 healthy controls. Serum calreticulin and liver function tests were detected. Western blot and immunohistochemistry were used to examine and localize calreticulin and intercellular cell adhesion molecule-1 expression in the biliary atresia liver tissues. Calreticulin in serum from biliary atresia patients were elevated. Moreover, the levels of calreticulin in biliary atresia patients correlated with gamma-glutamyl transferase. Calreticulin expression levels were elevated in biliary atresia liver specimens as compared to choledochal cysts infants. Protein expression levels of calreticulin and intercellular cell adhesion molecule-1 were positively correlated. Immunohistochemical detection showed augmented positive immunostaining for calreticulin and intercellular cell adhesion molecule-1 in biliary atresia as compared to choledochal cysts liver tissues. These results suggested that calreticulin may play a potential role in the etiology of biliary atresia. Furthermore, the calreticulin and intercellular cell adhesion molecule-1 as biomarkers may be used to monitor the severity of biliary atresia.

-Glutamyltransferase: value of its measurement in paediatrics

-Glutamyltransferase (GGT) is a microsomal enzyme that is widely distributed in human tissues involved in secretory and absorptive processes, particularly the bile canaliculi. Serum GGT is elevated in liver diseases affecting the biliary system, such as extrahepatic biliary atresia, sclerosing cholangitis and progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis (PFIC) type 3. Conversely, two other sub...

Effect of atorvastatin on the expression of gamma-glutamyl transferase in aortic atherosclerotic plaques of apolipoprotein E–knockout mice

BACKGROUND Gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT) is now considered to be one of the risk factors for cardiovascular disease. However, whether statins can alter GGT levels in arterial atheromatous plaque has not yet been studied. Therefore, the aim of this study is to determine whether statins can effectively decrease the expression of GGT in arterial atheromatous plaques. METHODS We randomly di...

Improvement in accuracy of gamma-glutamyl transferase for differential diagnosis of biliary atresia by correlation with age.

In order to determine the accuracy of serum gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) as a test for biliary atresia, we reviewed the charts of 29 infants with cholestatic jaundice less than one year of age. All patients underwent liver biopsy or laparotomy with cholangiogram to establish neonatal hepatitis (NH) or extrahepatic biliary atresia (EHBA). We also gathered information from 176 patients from p...

Up-Regulation of Integrinsn α2β1 and α3β1 Expression in Human Foreskin Fibroblast Cells after In-Vitro Infection with Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1

The interaction of Herpes Simplex Virus type 1 (HSV-1) with human fetal foreskin fibroblast (HFFF) cell was studied using a recent isolate of HSV-1 which was propagated in Hep-2 cells. HFFF cells were challenged with HSV-1 with a multiplicity of infection (MOI) of 1 virus/cell for 24 hours. Flow cytometric analysis demonstrated that HSV-1 challenged HFFF cells expressed increased levels of α2β1...
